That is Test cricket for you: it changes session by session.

The match began four and a half hours late due to rain and a damp outfield. Bangladesh's captain, Nazmul Hossain, won the toss and opted to bowl, aiming to exploit the conditions of the wet pitch early on. The opening bowlers delivered as expected, with Hasan Mahmood and Shariful Islam claiming three wickets for Pakistan within the first nine overs. Hasan dismissed Abdullah Shafiq, while Shariful accounted for Shan Masood and Babar Azam.

After losing three wickets for just 16 runs, Pakistan regrouped with the partnership of Saim Ayub and Saud Shakeel, who added 98 runs for the fourth wicket. Hasan eventually broke the partnership by dismissing Saim, who scored 56 runs. Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan then maintained a steady pace for the remainder of the day, with Shakeel finishing unbeaten on 57 runs and Rizwan contributing 24 runs.

For Bangladesh, Shariful and Hasan each took two wickets, while Nahid Rana, Mehdi Hasan Miraj, and Shakib Al Hasan went wicketless.

In total, 41 overs were bowled on the first day, with Pakistan scoring at an average of 3.85 runs per over.
