Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources, visited the flood-affected areas in Habiganj.
On
Friday, August 23, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment,
Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources, made these
remarks while responding to journalists’ questions after visiting the
flood-affected areas in Sadar Upazila of Habiganj district.
The
Water Resources Advisor emphasized that the government is fully committed to
addressing the ongoing flash flood situation in various districts across the
country. She stated that with swift and coordinated efforts, including the
involvement of students and the general public, it is possible to rescue those
stranded in remote areas. She also expressed gratitude to the government,
students, and volunteers for their active participation in assisting those
seeking refuge in shelters.
The
Water Resources Advisor mentioned that discussions will be held regarding the
unannounced release of water from upstream India, and measures will be taken to
manage the silt effectively. She also stated that action would be taken against
illegal dredging and that all embankments would be repaired promptly to prevent
future floods. She instructed government officials to engage students and local
communities in all related activities.
During
the visit, she was briefed on the flood situation, the condition of the
affected people, and the progress of rehabilitation efforts. Local
administration, district officials, journalists, and residents were present
during the visit. Earlier, she held discussions with local administration,
media, and civil society representatives at the Habiganj Circuit House
regarding the flood situation in Habiganj district.
After
visiting the areas affected by river erosion, the Water Resources Advisor
delivered a keynote speech at an exchange meeting with district and
upazila-level officials, public representatives, media personnel, and officials
from the Department of Environment, Department of Forests, and Water
Development Board, held at the Chunarughat Upazila Parishad auditorium.
