The clear skies over Rawalpindi
showed no signs of rain, and the once-green wicket was starting to turn a shade
of grey. It seemed that the third day of the first Test match in the two-match
series between Bangladesh and Pakistan might favor the batsmen.
Sadman Islam & Mominul Haque
After Pakistan declared their first
innings at 448 for 6, Bangladesh ended the second day at 27 runs in 12 overs,
setting the stage for a potentially significant total. Following fifties from
Sadman Islam and Muminul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das added their own
half-centuries, helping Bangladesh close the third day with a score of 316 runs
for 5 wickets in 92 overs. Nazmul Hossain's team is now trailing Pakistan's
first innings by 132 runs.
Although the third day of the
Rawalpindi Test largely belonged to Bangladesh, there were moments of
disappointment. Opener Sadman, returning to the Test side after two and a half
years due to Mahmudul Hasan's injury, fell just short of a century, scoring 93
runs off 183 balls with 12 boundaries. Muminul also got out after reaching his
fifty, scoring 50 runs off 76 balls. Veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim remains
unbeaten with 52 runs from 58 balls, while Liton Das reached his fifty late in
the day, ending with 52 runs from 58 balls as well.
The day did not begin well for
Bangladesh. Zakir Hasan was caught behind while attempting a late cut off
Naseem Shah, ending his innings at 12 runs from 58 balls with one boundary,
courtesy of a sharp catch by Mohammad Rizwan. Captain Nazmul Hossain was also
dismissed after spending some time at the crease, bowled by Khurram Shehzad in
the 27th over after scoring 16 runs from 42 balls.
At that point, Bangladesh was
struggling at 53 for 2 wickets. However, Muminul made good use of the
less-threatening new ball, finding runs early in his innings. Sadman, playing
at his usual pace, added 97 runs with Muminul, frustrating the Pakistani
bowlers. Khurram Shehzad eventually broke the partnership in the 52nd over,
dismissing Muminul for 50 runs off 76 balls with 5 boundaries. Sadman made a
similar mistake, getting bowled by Muhammad Ali after adding 52 more runs with
the experienced Mushfiqur.
Mushfiqur Rahim & Liton Kumar Das
Shakib Al Hasan attempted an
aggressive approach, scoring 15 runs off 16 balls before playing a loose shot
and getting caught at cover off Saim Ayyub in the 73rd over. At that point,
Bangladesh was at 218 for 5 wickets. The rest of the day belonged to the
Mushfiqur-Liton partnership, who put together an unbroken stand of 98 runs.
Mushfiqur reached his fifty off 104 balls and also became the second
Bangladeshi cricketer to cross 15,000 runs in international cricket. Liton
reached his fifty off just 52 balls, including three fours and a six in one
over off Naseem, which yielded 18 runs.
